Individual Health Insurance

Let’s say you’ve just launched your freelance graphic design business and left your corporate job behind. While this new venture offers flexibility and the excitement of entrepreneurship, you no longer have access to employer-provided health insurance, and your COBRA coverage has run out. This is where individual health insurance proves beneficial for your coverage needs. It ensures that you’re covered whether you need a routine doctor visit or more extensive medical care.

What is Individual Health Insurance?

Individual health insurance is a type of coverage that you purchase independently, either for just yourself or for your family. Unlike group insurance provided by employers, individual insurance is flexible, allowing you to choose a plan that best suits your healthcare needs and financial situation. These plans can be purchased during an open enrollment period each year, with certain states offering deadline extensions. If you miss this period, you must qualify for a special enrollment period triggered by life events such as marriage, relocation, or the birth of a child.

Coverage and Benefits

Since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was implemented in 2014, individual health plans are required to offer essential health benefits. They are issued without regard to medical history, ensuring you cannot be denied coverage. Additionally, ACA subsidies are available to help lower the cost of premiums for those who qualify and choose to purchase through health exchanges.

Medicare 101

As a federal health insurance program, Medicare is notable for its longevity and stability over the past five decades. It consistently meets the essential healthcare needs of senior citizens and individuals with certain disabilities or illnesses.

Original Medicare is administered by the federal government and typically involves a fee for each service. Below are the basic guidelines for its operation:

Factors That Affect Original Medicare Out-Of-Pocket Costs

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, pays for some of the expenses not covered by the original Medicare program (Parts A and B). Medicare supplements are not designed to replace Medicare. Instead, they supplement Original Medicare by paying for co-payments, coinsurance, deductibles, and more. Medigap or Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans are standardized by the same agency that oversees Medicare, but private companies, like Vogue Insurance, sell and administer these plans.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Since the 1970s, Medicare beneficiaries have had the option to receive their Medicare benefits through private health plans. Medicare Advantage plans, also called Medicare Part C, are health insurance plans approved by Medicare and run by private insurance companies. A Medicare Advantage plan is required to provide all Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B benefits and may include prescription drug coverage.

Most Medicare Advantage Plans also add additional benefits like dental or vision coverage, health club memberships, medical transportation, or coverage for hearing aids. Although some require the beneficiary to pay a premium, they are considerably lower than most Medicare supplements.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans

Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare and some Medicare Advantage plans. Private companies approved by Medicare offer these plans and must follow guidelines established by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

When to Enroll in Medicare Part D

If you are registered for Medicare Part A and/or Part B and reside within your plan’s service area, you are eligible to enroll in the Medicare drug benefit (Part D) during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). Your IEP for Part D typically aligns with your Part B enrollment period. This spans seven months, including three months before, the month of, and three months after your Medicare eligibility month. For instance, if your 65th birthday is on May 15, making you eligible for Medicare, your IEP would run from February 1 to August 31.

Note: If you are disabled and approaching 65, you will qualify for a new Part D Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This IEP extends for seven months, covering three months before you turn 65, the month of your 65th birthday, and the three months following. If you previously incurred a premium penalty for late enrollment in Part D, this penalty will cease once your new Part D IEP starts.

If you enroll in a Medicare drug plan within the three months prior to becoming eligible for Medicare, your coverage will commence the month you become eligible. If you enroll during your birthday month or within the following three months, your drug coverage will start on the first day of the month after you sign up. We advise you to enroll early in your IEP to ensure your coverage starts as soon as you’re eligible.

If you miss enrolling in a Medicare drug plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, you may have to wait until the Fall Open Enrollment to join. This period starts on October 15 and ends on December 7. Any changes or enrollments made during this time take effect on January 1. Additionally, you might incur a premium penalty for late enrollment.

You may also have a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in Part D under exceptional circumstances, including if:
